Hell, I failed Maths at school!

I’m just a blue-collar tradie who learned a few simple rules around how money works.

Society has rigged the game to favour the top 3% of people who experience financial freedom… and keep the other 97% stuck in financial prison with zero hope of ever breaking free.

It seriously makes my blood boil.

Because I remember what it felt like to be stuck in a job I hated… drowning in debt…  and utterly miserable.

Not so long ago, I was over $500,000 in debt. I had fallen into society’s trap of ‘earn more, spend more, borrow more’.

But today, I am debt-free & my net worth is in the high six-figures.

And – more importantly – I’m living a life of freedom on my own terms.

Here’s how I did it.

My world was shattered

Right after I finished school, I started my apprenticeship to become an auto-electrician.

My goal was to get a lucrative job in Australia’s mining industry. Everyone raved about earning the ‘big bucks’ in the mines.

By the time I was 25 I was fully qualified. I got my dream job in the mines, making $150,000 dollars a year.

Then I bought my dream home.

Then I married my dream wife.

Then we discovered my wife was pregnant with identical twin girls…

Life was unfolding to plan. Everything was falling right into place. We were living the ‘Australian dream’.

But then one day – when my wife was 18 weeks pregnant – I got a call that would change our lives forever.

I was driving out of the mine site when my phone came into reception.

I had more than a dozen missed calls from my wife. When I could finally call her back… she could hardly speak.

In a routine check-up that morning, she discovered that one of our Girls – Millie- had been diagnosed with a fatal condition and would not live past birth.

I was 11 hours from home. I drove through the night in torrential rain and storms to be with my wife.

And that same day our baby girls’ double pram had arrived. My wife had to carry it inside knowing it would never be used.

I was devastated.

I tried to come to terms with what had happened and move forward with knowing only one of our baby girls was going to make it.

I tried to enjoy the rest of my wife’s pregnancy clinging onto the joy that we would bring home one healthy baby.

But then…

Four weeks later we arrived at the hospital for our weekly check-up.

After the scan we knew something wasn’t right.

The specialists were taking an extremely long time… Everyone was talking in whispers.

Then they told us that there was something wrong with baby number 2 – Ayla – but they needed to get an extra opinion.

Thirty minutes seemed like an eternity sitting in the ultrasound room… It felt like a bad dream that couldn’t get any worse.

But then it did.

The head specialist came in and moved us to another room to tell us that Ayla also had a severe condition and would not survive past birth.

All of the hope that we had been clinging onto was gone. Our hearts were shattered.

Our entire world was shattered.

I Hit Breaking Point

A few days later I watched Alice give birth to Ayla and Millie.

I honestly don’t have the words to describe to you how beautiful and heartbreaking that was.

Because our perfect baby girls entered this world still.

We never got to hear them cry.

While most parents dread hearing their baby cry… that’s all we ever wished for.

We got to hold our darling baby girls for two short days.

As I was leaving to get lunch on the second day, a new, doting dad full of excitement bounded up to me and said with a smile…

Wow it’s so quiet up this end, you guys are so lucky your baby never cries!

He clearly had no idea of my heartache and was just trying to make conversation. I just nodded and smiled and kept walking.

I couldn’t bear to tell him why our room was so quiet.

Later that day we left the hospital with empty arms and broken hearts.

The months that followed were extremely dark for my wife and I. Time was a blur. The trauma was so intense that my wife can barely remember those bleak days.

Our crisis made me reflect on where I was at this point of my life…

We had the family home… the dream boat… new cars… beautiful home renovations.

But at this point it meant nothing to us.

It was all just…

Stuff.

Losing our baby girls made us realize what was truly important in life.

All of a sudden, our stuff meant nothing to us.

And after 10 years of earning $200,000 per year between us, all we had to show for it was $500,000 of debt.

I realised I was heartbroken as well as trapped in debt.

Something Had to Change

If I wanted to keep our home, I would have to either keep working in the mines or get a local job and work longer hours. Neither of those were appealing.

I wandered aimlessly through life for a few more weeks, grieving and reflecting.

Then one day, I stumbled across a successful online business led by an old friend of mine. This friend had started working with a money mentor who had helped him get out of debt & build a massive online business.

Now, at that point I knew less than zero about online businesses. I had spent my life fixing dump trucks!

But I was desperate. There was no way I was going back to the mines.

So I reached out to this mentor and asked if I could meet with him.

One week later, my wife & I flew to Tasmania to meet Paul Counsel, our new money mentor.

I Was Shocked When I First Met Him.

Paul Counsel had spent 25 years mentoring people to financial freedom… he had built five 7-figure businesses from the ground up… his net worth was in the 9 figures…

But when we arrived at his farm, he came to meet us wearing an old shirt, jeans and muddy gumboots.

I seriously would have had no idea that this old farmer was worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Because to Paul, money is all about the lifestyle freedom & choice it gives him.

This really landed with me.

In my conversations with Paul on the farm, I realised that while I was living the ‘great Australian dream’… it wasn’t MY dream.

And my heartbreak had made me stare that reality right in the face.

We stayed on Paul’s farm for a few days, and then I continued learning from Paul when we returned home.

Back home, I could have easily fallen back into ‘business as usual’. I could have easily slipped back into my life in the mines for another decade of sameness…

But I realised I wanted more for my life. My wife and I both did.

So we decided to sell our house to create the future that we actually wanted.

We bought a tiny home & moved it onto my in-laws’ farm.

Moving didn’t heal the pain. Our pain was still there. (And I still carry that pain today.)

But this was the new chapter, and we were going to make the most of it…

My Dream Come True

Twelve months later we found out that my wife was pregnant again with a little boy.

Later that year I watched her give birth to our beautiful son in an incredible home birth.

And now…

I’ve never returned to the mines and never will…

I’m building an online business to share what I’ve learned from my mentor Paul… and help people break free of the ‘earn-spend-borrow trap’ to live life on their own terms…

I’ve created a life where I can spend as many hours with my son as I want.

I play with my son in the mornings while my wife sleeps in. I take him to swimming lessons. And my wife doesn’t have to rush back to work which has allowed us to make parenting decisions that weren’t open to us before.

Now I get to hear my baby son cry and it is truly a dream come true.
